Chinese Herbal Medicine:
Herbs are commonly used in China, often hand in hand with Acupuncture and alongside Western Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine has classified over 3000 plus herbs: plants, minerals and animal substances.
Chinese herbals are commonly used in groups of herbs, seldom alone, called a formula. Most formulas are fine tuned and tailored to an individuals specific health condition being treated. However, there are also some formulas available that can address a variety of conditions.
There has been much press as of late regarding the safety of Chinese Herbals. Chinese herbs are safe if taken appropriately. For example, Ephedra, Ma Huang in chinese, has no place in diet pills and was never meant to be used that way. In Chinese Herbal Medicine it is most often used to treat colds, flu and asthma. Typically it is used on a short term basis only, under the care of a practitioner.
